I would never ever, ever recommend or tell ANYONE to get a cockatoo EVER, you won’t hear it from me.
If you have had your eyes on a cockatoo please answer the following honestly, please. Or else you will end up with a biting, A VERY LOUD SCREAMER, a feather plucker and god knows what else.
Do you have a very large cage?
Yes
No
If no, take getting any large bird out of your mind immediately
Do you have toys and different perches suitable for a large parrot?
Yes
No
If no, same as the above, no parrot for you
Do you have allergies?
Yes
No
If yes do not get a cockatoo or a cockatiel, cockatoos give off a very large amount of dander.
Can you handle screaming?
Yes
No
Go on youtube, search ‘Screaming cockatoo’ put speakers on, volume to its highest and press play, yes that is EXACTLY what a screaming cockatoo sounds like. THAT IS EXACTLY HOW LOUD IT IS. Now answer the questions honestly. I’m leaning towards no.
Can you handle biting?
Yes
No
Cockatoos can break the skin and draw blood. This is how my cockatoo when he wasn’t tame bit me. He would lung out, clamp his beak around my finger, sink his beak into my skin, draw blood, and still wouldn’t let go. I had to use my other hand to pry his beak off my bleeding finger. Most importantly, can you handle that type of bite without jerking your hand back? For most people this is impossible.
Even though I still would never recommend a cockatoo doesn’t mean it’s impossible to have one, you just need to be that special person who can handle and correctly train and tame a cockatoo. Bandit is an amazing cockatoo, fun, playfully, cuddly, always excited to train and absolutely hilarious.
