There really is no such thing as a ‘beginners’ bird, nope, it all depends on how your bird turns out. BUT there are birds that first time owners should steer clear from at first which is definitely the bigger birds. I would recommend, actually I would insist, that first time owners go with:
- Budgies OR
- Cockatiels OR
- Lovebirds
You can teach smaller birds the same tricks experienced owners teach larger parrots. Personally I love the cockatiels, a cinnamon cockatiel was my first parrot, he was absolutely amazing, a thrilling personality and a naturally curious little guy and cuddly. First time owners should begin with one of the above and train and tame your little guy to its FULL POTENTIAL. To prove to yourself you can tame and train a larger bird.
Then you can become an experienced owner and have birds like
- Amazons
- Greys
- Macaws
- Alexandrines
- Ring necks
- And more!
You probably noticed that cockatoos were not on the list and most definitely not on the ‘beginners’ list. I would never ever recommend cockatoos to anyone, ever, ever, never. Now don’t think, oh yeah, how ironic, you own a cockatoo. Yes I do but because I can handle a cockatoo, cockatoos should ONLY go to special homes with owners who can HANDLE and look after a cockatoo PROPERLY. If you think you can handle a cockatoo, search on youtube ‘Cockatoo screaming’ put you volume to the HIGHEST to get the realistic image and press play. Terrible. Please read stories from cockatoo owners who had bitten off WAY more than they could chew and have a screaming, bitting, hissing, feather plucking, swooping, and blood drawing cockatoo. That will happen if you’re not honest with yourself and decide to get a cockatoo then realise that you are not a suitable owner at all for a cockatoo. Cockatoos will make it its life goal to destroy every piece of wood, paper, cardboard including your walls. Go to ‘Cockatoos’ for a test to see if you can be a potential owner for a cockatoo.
