First of all should you get a bird at all?
Are you away for most of the day for work?
Yes
No
If yes then stop right there. A bird is already not suitable for your lifestyle. ALL birds need constant attention, some perhaps more than others. If you’re away for most of the day your bird will becoming a screamer and a feather plucker which is no good for the bird or you. Pet fish would be a better choice
Can you afford toys, a large cage, food etc
Yes
No
If no a bird is out of the question. Expensive! Lots of toys are essential! If yes carry on.
Can you afford sudden vet expenses and vet checkups?
Yes
No
If no, a bird is not for you, monthly check ups are important. Birds are not domestic as cats and dogs are, whenever birds are ill they are VERY, VERY clever at hiding it. Monthly checkups will be good to make sure your bird is not ill and to get its nails trimmed or and if necessary beak trimmed.
Can you commit yourself to having whats best for your bird in mind?
Yes
No
If no, seriously, steer clear from pet birds. Your bird must have 6 – 8 hours out of its cage per day. It should have at least 3 training sessions per day. Plus you need to bathe your bird and so much more, can you do this for 10 years minimum with small birds or 60 - 80 years average with larger birds. Birds are pets for life seriously.
If you passed without me telling you to get away from pet birds that’s great! You can be the owner of a lovely feathered friend. I would recommend that you research for Parrot homes and see if you can adopt one, most are cheaper than usual and already tame! And you would be your own personal hero for rescuing another bird dumped in homes! Otherwise if the Parrot homes are too far from where you live look for a breeder next if you absolutely positively cannot find one, fine; get one from the pet shop. I don’t like pet shops selling birds because there are never toys in the cage, the cage is a bit dirty and I just don’t like it so buying a bird from there will only encourage them to bring in a sell more, so if you just can’t find a breeder or a Parrot rescue, fine. But please just have a pet shop as your last and final option to turn to. Other than that, welcome to the world of birds!
